“I don’t like the way it writes.” Have you ever felt that way when trying ChatGPT?

You’ve asked ChatGPT, or another AI, to write a text for you. It comes back grammatically correct and follows your instructions, but… something feels off.

The text feels flat. Unreliable. Maybe even a little too perfect.

I’ve felt the same way. You want it to be a tool that amplifies your own voice, not one that replaces it with a generic robot tone. But there is a solution — and it’s easier than you think. Forget commands like “write more human.” To really make AI sound like you, we need to give it better instructions.

Here’s a complete, step-by-step guide with ready-made templates and a proven tool to turn your AI into a helpful writing partner.

Method 1: Manual analysis

The first and most important step is that the AI must understand your unique style. If you don’t show how you write, it will only guess — and that often goes wrong.

You can do a quick analysis by giving ChatGPT examples of your texts and asking it to create a “style block.” This is a good way to get started and understand the basics.

Use this prompt for a manual analysis:

I will provide you with one or more examples of my own text. Your job is to analyze them and create a “style block” that I can reuse in other prompts to help an AI model mimic my writing style.

You are an expert in text analysis. Analyze tone, sentence structure, vocabulary, and writing habits shown in my examples. Be specific and avoid generic phrases. Your response must follow exactly this format:

--- START STYLE BLOCK ---
# Writing Style
## Tone [Describe the tone — e.g. casual and witty, formal and professional, etc.]
## Sentence Structure [Short and punchy / long and flowing / varied, etc.]
## Vocabulary [Common word choices, jargon, slang, etc.]
## Writing Habits [e.g. uses metaphors, rhetorical questions, lists, personal anecdotes, etc.]
--- END STYLE BLOCK ---

Method 2: Use my popular GPT — “Tonläget”

To make the process easier and more in-depth, I’ve created a Custom GPT called Tonläget.

It has quickly become very popular, with over 340 conversations and a top rating of 4.8 out of 5 from satisfied users. Instead of doing the analysis yourself, Tonläget works like a personal “tone of voice” coach. It guides you through a series of questions about your style and your audience to help you build a complete and tailored style document from scratch.

It’s the best way to create a foundation you can reuse in all your future work with AI.

You’ll find my custom GPT here:

If you’re using the free version of ChatGPT, try this simpler variant so you don’t hit the request limit:https://chatgpt.com/g/g-67fcec1f74188191aaa3588ebf8bbd56-tonlaget-for-gratisanvandare

Adjust punctuation that reveals AI writing

This is a trick to make text sound even more natural. AI often has bad habits with punctuation. It overuses em-dashes (—) and colons (:), but rarely uses exclamation points (!) naturally.

Use this prompt to fix punctuation:

## Punctuation to avoid
When you write, avoid punctuation patterns that are typical of AI. Write with a natural variation that reflects how people actually write.

## Do NOT use:
- Em-dashes (—) everywhere to replace commas or periods
- Colons (:) before simple lists or in titles
- Perfectly structured bullet lists as default
- A fear of exclamation points — use them naturally in informal text!

### Instead, use:
- Commas to create pauses
- Periods to end thoughts and create rhythm
- Semicolons (;) to connect two closely related ideas
- Flowing text instead of stiff lists

The most important tool? Your own head.

Whether you use the manual prompts or my Tonläget GPT to define your style, remember that AI is a tool, not a finished writer. It can mimic a style, but it cannot care about your message or your audience. That’s your job. Always read through the text AI produces. Adjust, cut, and add. Ask yourself the golden question: Does this sound like me?

When you’re done, turn it into instructions

If you have the paid version of ChatGPT, you can enter your style document directly into the settings as custom instructions. Ask ChatGPT to summarize your document into instructions so it can always follow your unique tone of voice.

Once you’ve created the instructions with AI, you can paste them here in the settings — Customize ChatGPT.
Once you’ve created the instructions with AI, you can paste them here in the settings — Customize ChatGPT.

Do you write for different audiences or have multiple clients? Then it’s a good idea to create several Tone of Voice documents for different channels or projects. Add the document to a project in ChatGPT with a short instruction to always take your writing rules into account! 😁

Already have writing guidelines at work? It may still be smart to review them. They often need adjustments to work with an LLM (large language model). It’s not about rewriting everything from scratch, but about clarifying, specifying, and making them easier for AI to interpret.
